Soon to be gone - Fallen Trees

Another photo from the recent walk in the woods series. I don’t think this forest has ever been maintained in any way — lots of older timber, some fallen, but new growth as well. If you get off the path it’s somewhat a mess — typical southeastern woods.

I can hardly believe January’s gone with still little sign of winter…the forecast is for near 70°F today. I can see trees and other plants starting to show signs of budding for new spring growth.

  1. And yet, here in Aus we’ve had an unusually cool summer- something is wonky somewhere…

  2. Since we’re in the same coast Earl, literally state borders apart, I’m enjoying (wondering) this unusually warm January. I had my windows open all night last night and haven’t bothered with heat for almost 3 days now, incredible.

I was tempted to skip work yesterday and take tito for a hike.

    • Nik, we’ve had some of our windows open as well. They say there is winter still coming and Phil the groundhog says six more weeks of winter. :-)

  3. We’ve been enjoying some mild weather here in the Denver area – but, apparently, that’s going to end in the next day or so. What can you do? It’s winter!

  4. The weather here has been rather uninspiring photographically as well in NY, but I really don’t miss the cold or the high heating bills we had last year. Ya gotta take the bad with the good I guess.

    • Ken, you’re right about the heating bills. But I worry about what this may speak of for the coming summer. We’ve had periods of drought with water rationing in the past and I’d hate to see it again if the summer is severe. But, as John above said, “What can you do?”

  5. i always find these forest scenes to be very difficult to arrange in a strong composition as there are lots of small elements that distract
but you’ve made a brilliant job here, congrats!

  6. The bright leaves really set the woods shot in a very attractive way. Looks like quite a nice place for an exploring walk.

    • Don, thanks. Yes, it’s a nice place to spend some time walking, thinking and making a few photos. Those three things for me go together well.

  7. Those leaves are just brilliant. Without them—well, I won’t spend time on that. As is, this transformed a cold scene into one vibrant with life. Terrific framing.

  8. I always find it quite diffucult to take a great image in the forest but this one is fantastic! The vibrancy of the red leaves and the depth is wonderful. Great work, Earl!
Last weekend we had the first snow in London – the whole city looked beautifully enchanted for a couple of days. I hope that the winter will arrive very soon for you too.

    • Martina, thank-you so much. I like winter in general and enjoy a nice snow. I’ve missed having it this year and I hope this mild winter doesn’t turn into an early spring with a scorching hot summer. I can imagine how beautiful London was under a blanket of white. Did you play in the snow? :-)
