The Wall - Salisbury, NC

Sometimes I’ll give myself a challenge. A challenge like picking a subject which on the surface is boring and daring myself to find a way to photograph and process it into something interesting.

Around the curve - Brick Wall

Red bricks — As I’ve said before they’re used a lot for building in this area and as I was walking the historic neighbor hood taking photos of the homes and morning light I kept coming upon brick walls. You’d think something with this many lines, textures and surfaces would be naturally interesting. Nope, a brick wall can make a really boring photo.

But a challenge is a challenge so here’s two images I came up with. The first a high straight wall and the second a gentle curving wall.

Have a good weekend everyone.

  1. The image of the gentle curving wall has real mystery; I can help but wonder if someone is lurking around the corner.

    • Steve, Well the thing I was watching for as I walked passed this curved wall was a car backing out the driveway. :-) But I’m glad I capture that element of suspense. Thanks!

  2. A brick wall makes a fine challenge. Both are well done and interesting. The curved wall “wins” for me with the building in the shot and the inherent appeal of the curve in the bricks. Nice post.

  3. Well, Earl, your processing sure made them interesting. I really like how you captured the curve of the wall in the bottom picture. You are just invited to walk along the wall and are guided right towards the house. Great post processing.

    • Hi Paul, thanks. Yeah, there was more then the usual processing on these two — they were very plane photos to start with. I both enhanced the details and simplified the structure on that curved wall image. As I told Don above, it’s my first choice between the two as well.

  4. There is very nice fall off on the light in the first photo and the second has a “just around the corner” appeal.
    I like them both.

    • Ken, thanks. That “just around the corner” appeal is hard for me to resist but like you I like them both for very different reasons.

  5. I know you didn’t ask anyone to pick between them, but I will express a preference for the second curved one. It is just an incredibly unique view and well seen. I agree, the processing also fits it very well.

    • Mark, thanks. I like hearing the likes, or dislikes for that matter, my photos evoke in people. I think feedback from others can often serve as a plumb line for our own judgments — at least I find it that way.

  6. From my perspective, the first image has a mysterious feel to it and the second one has an inviting feel to it. I like them both. And, I think everything is a subject with questions of how do we present it for others to enjoy.

  7. As I am late to the party on these, I can’t add anything new. But, I will register another bravo! for the original captures and for the just right processing. My vote goes with the curved wall, just in case you are keeping score. :)
