Moss and pine needles
A green carpet beneath a pine forest

I’m not sure how you’d classify this photo of moss with pine needles — it’s not an abstract, nor is it a macro shot, perhaps a close-up is most descriptive.

It was taken handheld with my 24-70mm lens at 70mm. I’m just tall enough to be able to stand almost on my tip-toes, bend my neck and shoot straight down, barely exceeding the minimum focal distance requirements for this lens. It often turns into a dance as I shift to keep my shadow from the image and my toes beyond the frame while trying to hold steady and keep my balance. I’m certain I’m “entertaining” to watch when making this type of shot so I try only to do it when alone.

I was fairly successful with my “dance” in this case and captured good detail. Moss often looks almost furry until you get a little closer, which this image displays. Of course in summer it would be fuller with less yellow/brown.

It’s Friday, have a good weekend!

  1. Nice shot – it’s amazing how things can look different when viewed in detail.

I’m sure many people have wondered at my strange poses and antics to get a shot – but it’s worth it in the end :)

    • Thanks, and there are times when I’ve caught people looking at me strangely as I work to get just the shot I want. But your absolutely correct, the results justify the means in this case. Have a wonderful weekend!

  3. The needles make a nice contrast to the green and the bit of flower. I like it!

  4. Tell you what Earl. I won’t try to classify it. I’ll just enjoy it.

  5. I imagine we have all gotten our share of strange looks, but that standing on tip-toes thing sounds like quite a good exercise. I think either details or close-ups covers it nicely, but I am ultimately with PJ. I’ll simply settle back and enjoy.

    • Anita, yes, getting those strange looks is somewhat a rite of passage for a photographer. It’s a positive sign when our love of the art and results outweigh our own self-conciousness. Thanks, and have a great weekend.

  6. It’s all worth the funny looks if this is the result. Nice shot.

  7. Earl,

It has a lot of lines and textures, and great color. Almost, as you say, an abstract, but it’s pleasing to look at all the details.

    Very nice,
    Alan

  8. It’s always reassuring to hear fellow photographers admit to their public dancing, and in some cases, proud of it. :-) I did not realize that lens had the large of a minimal focusing distance. Anyway, keep dancing and posting, Earl.
