Butterfly Brigade
Butterfly Brigade – Cooleemee River Park, NC
I don’t know what the attraction was for these butterflies to this spot in the sand. The spot appeared damp, a darker tone then the surrounding area — perhaps soda or beer was emptied here. This was definitely a case where I wished I’d had my D700 with a longer lens instead of the Canon S90. I couldn’t get very close to these butterflies so this image has been cropped by about 50% and certainly has some inherent weaknesses from doing that.

After reading Jeffrey Friedl’s “Analysis of Lightroom JPEG Export Quality Setting,” link shared in yesterdays post, I’m now exporting JPEG’s to this blog at Adobe Lightroom’s default 75 quality setting. I’d been using a higher setting but I don’t believe it was buying me anything except a larger than required image file size.

Great news, at least to me, cooler temperatures (90°F highs) are predicted here this week and there’s even a chance of rain — sorely needed. I’ve long accepted I’m not a creature of summer and I deal much better with cold than I do with hot and humid. It also means that this week the landscaping we did last fall doesn’t have to be watered every day. Those new plantings cost too much to be allowed to die in the heat. :-)

  1. Earl,

I think this is a very nice photo of the butterflies! They are all grouped together, like a family. I like the color and detail, and the blue dots on them, very nice capture!

  2. Good to hear that you folks are going to get a little cooling! If you want an extended period of cooling, come to Astoria as it’s not predicted to get above 70 all week.

    • Steve, I could stand 70 for a while. That’s the daily low mark here, even on this cooler week. :-)

  3. I thought I read somewhere that they are going after salt or some other mineral. Cool shot – a squadron of butterflies!

    • Mark, you could well be correct on the salt, but this area is used for picnics so it may be someone poured something sweet out at this spot.. Hey, I like the term squadron better than brigade — more fitting with butterflies. :-)

  4. What a great freakin’ shot.
