Whitetail Deer - Fakahatchee Strand State Preserve, FL

It’s not only been plants and blooms which have been the target of my camera in Florida, yesterday, Bonnie and I drove Jane’s Memorial Scenic Dr., 11 miles of sand road through the heart of the Fakahatchee Strand State Preserve. Whitetail Deer were spotted ahead on the road but quickly disappeared into the swamp as we grew close. As we continued past their location I looked in my rear view mirror to see, two of them were once again in the road so I stopped the car and took a couple of shots. I got a number of photos with both deer I’ll publish later. Oh, also, that road is certainly not as smooth as it looks in this photo. ;-)

There were also a number of “Gators” laying in the sun along the road ranging in size from about 18 inches to a real brute that had to be at least 9-10 feet long – photos later.

I’m use to post-processing on a 24 inch calibrated monitor so working these photos on a 15-inch laptop display is strange and I’m not sure I’m comfortable with the results. Hopefully they’re not too bad.

  1. Not bad at all, Earl. Great photo! I like how the road leads your eye to the deer and then to the back of the road, where the blur brings your eye back down the road, and from side to side.

    • Eric, thanks! I have a couple of photos where both deer are in them that may turn out to be better but I’m waiting to post-process them on my home machine. I’ll probably post at least one of them later.

  2. Remember, use the telephoto lens for the gators! Love the shot and she is sure keeping her eye on you. Something I’ve never notice before, the forward legs seem shorter than the hind legs, giving the effect of always leaning forward. Is that normal?

    • Monte, not only did I use the telephoto lens but I left the car running and the door open… ;-)

I’m not sure but I think it’s normal for the front legs to be a bit shorter, although they do look much shorter in this photo?

  3. You caught her at just the right moment. The rich warm reddish tones play beautifully against the greens. She looks normal to me.

    • Anita, thanks. I thought the deer look normal too but then when Monte said something it put me into second guessing mode. :-)
