January Waterfall
January Waterfall

While walking along the river, dam and waterfall I took a few longer exposures using a Singh-Ray Vari-ND Filter. The water flowing over the dam seemed clearer then I’ve often seen it — perhaps because we’ve had higher water levels for a while or due to the colder temperatures. After making this photo I stood in place for a while, watching and listening, until the biting cold urged me to move on. I did so reluctantly.

  1. The call of nature will ask us to watch and listen, it has much to tell us. I took a workshop a few years ago with Moose Peterson where he said some of the best images are the ones we keep in our minds.

    • Monte, Moose is on to something, I keep going back to certain places trying to capture those images I see in my mind — it’s motivational.

  2. The blueness of the water certainly coincides with the air temperature! :-) I need to get out my Vari-ND filter and play with it a bit. It’s been dormant too long!

    • Yea, the water was unusually clear this visit and the angle of the sun made a nice blue-green tint.

I don’t use my Vari-ND often but each time I do the results make me wonder why I wait so long between shooting with this wonderful filter.

  3. When I worked in the woods, one of the joys was to stand by as stream and listen to the magical music it made as it flowed over the rocks.

Hi, I’m an eagle scout working on a national conservation project (William T. Hornaday award) in cooperation with the park. Trying to remove the old bridge at the end of the park due to the hazards, is there any way you can get some shots of the dangerous conditions down by the two pillars?

    • Hi Elijah, if the weather cooperates I probably can. At the moment the water level is too high and there’s more rain called for on Tuesday. What time frame are you needing these photos?

      • Hi, this project is just in the planning stages but I would like to use your shots when I meet with the owners of the textile mill and south yadkin power company. As far as time frames any time between now and november, although I’ll probably present this at the Big Sweep in August or September with your permission.

        • I’m glad to help Elijah. You can use my photos and I’ll be happy to take any more you may need. If I don’t have exactly what your looking for, I’m open to meeting you there some day and you can tell me what your ideas are for photos and I’ll make the shots.

That time frame will be easy to work with! :-)

  5. Hi Earl – Small world. My kid was telling me about your great Bull Hole pics (and how impressed he was) and said he left you a message. I said, “Hey, I know that guy.” We’ve talked on his blog before. And, I think that you saw the River Rescue stuff on my Barbecue Master blog (Eli is the one who did the rescue). Anyway, I wanted to say “hey” and let you know I’m the Momma person. There’s no rush on his project. He is working on conservation for Venture Scouts and hopes to help there at the Bull Hole. Tks, Cyndi

    • Hey Cyndi,

It is a small world. I’ll be glad to help Eli however I can and once the water goes down I’ll take some photos of the old bridge pillars. I was there this past weekend and the water was so high that the sandy beach was even covered. When the water goes down to a more manageable level I’ll take the photos and email both you and Eli.

If you don’t hear anything for a while don’t feel bad about reminding me. ;-)

  6. Tks (-: Momma bear watching the big cub. I’m not sure he knew to check the email feed, but I’ll make sure he sees the messages. I think he just bookmarked you. He was excited about your pics and was shocked when I told him that I knew you from online. My direct email in cyndiallison at gmail.com if you need that later.
