A winter tour

by Earl on January 31, 2010

in Photography

Instead of staying in yesterday during the final stages of our recent winter event, the wife and I decided we were going to explore and enjoy the beauty of this new snow before it began to melt or became dirty.
This wasn’t all that big of an adventure, our small SUV has 4WD.
We did a loop [...]

Winter Snapshots

by Earl on January 30, 2010

in Photography

Winter has made another appearance in a big way. It began as snow yesterday evening before sundown and is supposed to continue in some form most of today. Currently I can hear frozen rain/ice hitting the windows.
There’s perhaps 5-6 inches accumulation so far and more in the forecast. The temperature will drop to 13F tonight [...]

Cheerwine

by Earl on January 29, 2010

in Photography

This photo is a local building in Salisbury, NC. The story behind the signs on the side of the building is that in 1917 the soft drink Cheerwine was first produced in Salisbury by the Carolina Beverage Corp. Cheerwine later became a registered trademark in 1926.
You may never have heard of Cheerwine. It is a [...]

It looks like the earth’s wearing a little thin in places.

I finally win something

by Earl on January 27, 2010

in Observations

Toyota has a recall and current sales suspension on eight recent models (2009-2010) of it’s most popular automobiles for a problem which might cause the accelerator pedal to stick partially or fully open. They’ve not announced a fix yet and say it’s rare and is more likely to happen as the accelerator mechanisms become worn. [...]

Forgotten doors

by Earl on January 27, 2010

in Photography

I’ve always been someone aware of the past, feeling the importance of those things that make us who we are, those experiences which mold our very mental and emotional being. So while moving through life, from one room to the next, I’ve pulled many a door closed behind me but I’ve always attempted to remember [...]

Flip-side

by Earl on January 26, 2010

in Photography

This photo’s directly related to yesterdays “Alleyways” post photo — you could say they’re attached. The far right doorway in this photo is the same doorway at the far right (top of the deck steps) in yesterdays photo. This is, in fact, the flip-side of the brick wall, an old loading dock.
The same wall, two [...]

Alleyways

by Earl on January 25, 2010

in Photography

Initially what caught my eye in this scene was the long natural wood railing/deck under the bright sunlight. Later I realize it probably also appeals to my natural attraction to paths.
Taken near the middle of the day, this setting served as a good exercise in balancing exposure between deep shadows and bright sunlit highlights. As [...]

Steam engines sold here

by Earl on January 24, 2010

in Photography

[caption id="8058" align="aligncenter" width="420" caption="Steam Engines - The old Frick Co."] [/caption] Before World War I the Frick Company supplied sawmills, steam engines, threshers, tractors and heavy farm equipment to the surrounding areas of Salisbury, NC. Today this historic 15,000 square foot building has been renovated and houses a collection of shops and galleries. Wanting to portray the feeling of the age and history in this image, I went for grain, texture and fading — I’m not confident how successful I was. :-)

Switching tracks

by Earl on January 22, 2010

in Photography

At the End of a Railroad Track
I seek salvation
At the end of a railroad track,
With an old blind dog,
And a beat up hobo pack.
I don’t know where the railroad will take me,
I haven’t the slightest clue,
I only hope that I can see,
The truth beneath the lie.
The railroad track is long,
With lots of hills and valleys,
But [...]

Breaking in

by Earl on January 21, 2010

in Photography

Evening before last the wife and I were leaving for dinner and in the rush I left my keys in the house locking us out. Of course I realized this immediately, I didn’t have a key to the car either, and after a few minutes trying to jimmy the internal garage door a single measured [...]
