August 2009

While I’m still a couple of days away from receiving my upgrade copy of Apples OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, I have been reading and monitoring others experience and it appears overall a good release. Remember, Snow Leopard is only for Intel based Macs. If you’re using an older PowerPC processor Mac, Snow Leopard will [...]

Weekend Photo

Sailing beneath the fog
The fog lifts from the surface of the water but stubbornly clings to the surrounding mountain peaks as a small sailboat makes its way near Juneau, Alaska–I often think how nice it would have been to be in that small boat.

With Purpose

by Earl on August 28, 2009

in Photography

Most of my photography to this point has been a matter of making photos of scenes taken from the environment available, depending upon where I happen to be. The “where I happen to be” has usually been driven by events/needs in my life other then photography, such as vacations or visits to places with other [...]

This Week: Handyman

by Earl on August 26, 2009

in Home Improvement

We purchased our current home in 2006 primarily because it was close to work and was a single level home. We’d been living in a tri-level and both my wife and I were tired of all the stairs. Although not openly discussed at the time, I don’t believe we purchased this house thinking it would [...]

It’s been announced by Apple (and everyone else) that the next version of Apple OS X (Snow Leopard) 10.6 ships this Friday, August 28th. Apple is taking pre-orders as of this morning at the apple store.
I’ve already placed a family pack pre-order via Amazon, since I’ll have a number of computers to upgrade. If your [...]

Weekend Photo

A low line of shore was visible at first on the right between the movement of the waves and fog, but when we came further it was lost sight of, and nothing could be seen but the mist curling in the rigging, and a small circle of foam. — John Millington Synge

Moments of Peacefulness

by Earl on August 22, 2009

in Photography

While there are signs that summer is drawing to a close and fall is waiting just around the corner, there’s still time for summer blooms.
There’s an abundance of insects for flower blooms this time of year. Perhaps for the insects it’s like a last minute rush to the store for supplies. I had to be [...]

For a second

by Earl on August 21, 2009

in Photography

Viewing this photo I have to wonder about the history of this small mini-forest covered island–the size/age of these trees indicate they’ve been there for some time. I’d guess this island came to this point of it’s existence due to erosion and perhaps a change in the path of the river–at one time perhaps the [...]

Final Approach

by Earl on August 19, 2009

in Photography

There’s no single approach when it comes to photography. Photography is as personal and individual as the fingerprints of the photographer. There are basic photography rules, which can be helpful, and the laws of physics, which most often must be obeyed, but beyond that photography is limited only by the individual powers of creativity.
This flexible [...]

Nuggets: Peninsula

by Earl on August 18, 2009

in Photography

This particular photo caught my eye the second time around due to its soft horizon (there are mountains in the distance) which almost seemed to merge with the sky. The rocky peninsula contrasted sharply against this soft horizon.
I softened the peninsula during post processing to create a more pleasing and softer overall mood.
To my [...]

Reworking the claim

by Earl on August 17, 2009

in Photography

I’m going back through some of my photo archives giving a second look to some photos I previously discarded.
Photos that previously filtered out as not interesting are now catching my attention. It’s certainly not the archived photographs that have changed, it’s my personal filters. That’s why I like to flip through some of my older [...]
