March 2009

Today I spoke with a friend from a company where I worked many years. This company is an automotive parts supplier and is hard hit by the current economical recession and lack of automotive sales.
At one time there was over 1,400 associates working at a main site and two smaller remote facilities. Now the remote [...]

Back to the falls

by Earl on March 29, 2009

in Photography

As any who follow this blog might know, I often visit and photograph at the Cooleemee Riverside Park (Bull Hole) located on the South Yadkin River near the small town of Cooleemee, NC.
While usually interesting, it’s especially so after a few days of rain–such as we just experienced.
By contrast, in dry periods little or no [...]

Low Tide Storm
“I close my eyes and see the black, I open them again and I see the world, I’ve hidden from fears, and that knife sears, so welcome back to the world. Don’t close your eyes or you will miss the storm, and you will miss what follows after, the beauty.” — unknown

Creative kitchenware….lighting

by Earl on March 28, 2009

in Photography

I thought about the possibilities of using everyday kitchenware to function as off-camera light modifiers.

David Jackson posted a creative and informative article about using everyday cook/kitchenware as photographic lighting modifiers. I found it to be an interesting topic and some of the items photographic results surprised me–the good type of surprise!
I may get a white [...]

Winters Reach
Grey trees, grey skies and grey outside with mist and rain these last two days.
Hopefully there’s nice sunny weather on the way. I’m planning on a visit to my daughter in a little over two weeks and to take in the Spring Festival of Flowers at Biltmore Estate, Asheville, NC.
Of course I’ll have camera, [...]

More macro spring

by Earl on March 24, 2009

in Photography

Here’s two more photos from my macro signs of spring. I have no idea what types of plants these are. I’m terrible at identifying plants.
As a child I remember my mother, my grandmother and my aunts all being able to give the proper names for every plant they came across–especially any type of flowering [...]

Under my feet

Purple Dead-nettle
My initial observation as I walked a wooded trail near a small pond late last week was it was perhaps still early for spring wild flowers to be blooming–glancing down I realized I’d almost missed a spring production right under my feet.
These photographs of a Purple Dead-nettle was taken with tripod using a Nikon [...]

Patiently Waiting
It seems I’m stuck on a winter to spring transition theme. Luckily spring will soon dominate giving me new material.
This view of a hardwood forest seems still in the grip of winter but if you look closely you’ll find some signs of green beginning to make an appearance.

Remnants of Winter

by Earl on March 21, 2009

in Photography

While walking, and photographing the first spring blooms, the remnants of winter were evident.
Ice, snow and wind combined with soft wet ground usually brings down a number of trees and limbs each winter. If it’s in a public park they’re quickly cut to size and disposed of. In unmanaged areas they the decaying process [...]

Spring Blooms
“Spring is when you feel like whistling even with a shoe full of slush.” – Doug Larson
On this the first official day of Spring, Vernal Equinox 2009, I thought posting of spring colors would be appropriate. It seems that many flowering plants have jumped the gun again this year–already blooming for several weeks.
I guess [...]

Each one your own

River Rocky (South Yadkin River, North Carolina)
Sometimes with post-processing I tend to push a little beyond normal, whatever that is, getting surreal or strange results. The finished product is not so much planned as accidental–justified in my mind as creative art. Yea, for many I couldn’t duplicate the process.
But that’s okay, because sometimes the process [...]
