A few days away

Weathered – this weathered hardwood stump looks to have survived many years as it’s softer wood decays first. Moss brings life, while hastening the decay process.

I may not post here for a few days. We’re making a short visit to the James River/Williamsburg, VA, area. Not the best time of the year for a visit [...]

Comments: You be the Judge

by Earl on January 27, 2009

in Observations, Photography

When reviewing and/or post-processing photos I judge the particular characteristics in each image that appeal to me. I have no one else to please.
However, I often think that I may not be ruthless enough in the editing stage. I sometimes become attached to my photos–the good and the not-so-good. This may partly come from the [...]

Perhaps bigger is better

in Photography, Reviews

I thought I’d share a good review from Austria (in English) of the new Nikon D3x which includes good visuals of how the D3x 24.5-megapixel resolution translates to photos. There are comparison photos to those of a Nikon D3 as well.
The D3x sample photos in this review are impressive and in a situation where you [...]

Enjoying the moment

by Earl on January 24, 2009

in Photography

Early Morning Fishing – It’s as much about the process as actually catching fish, especially along a beautiful ocean beach as the sun rises–to enjoy the moment and lose yourself in your thoughts. This gentleman was certainly doing both.

I haven’t taken any photos this week. There are weeks where I don’t and then other weeks [...]

Cascading Waters – Bull Hole River Park
This photo was taken last Saturday morning when it was 8°F. Look closely at the photo and you’ll see ice on the branches in the top left and on the rocks along the waters edge.
Someone standing close by would no doubt have thought I was shooting in “continuous high” [...]

Nikon D700 Firmware Version 1.01 was released today.

The following improvements have been made in version 1.01
- When Custom Setting a4 Focus tracking with lock-on was set to Off in Continuous-servo AF, the lens drive moved gradually without achieving focus. This issue has been resolved.
- When the Speedlight SB-800 was mounted on the camera with [...]

On the home front, a little snow

by Earl on January 20, 2009

in Observations

My friend Paul has already posted of the snow at his home. He’s located about 40 miles to the southwest of me in Charlotte, NC, and I believe they received a bit more snow then we did.
Since Paul posted a photo of his dog, Hobbs, I’ll follow his lead.
We added a new member [...]

Visiting a Circuit City (CC) store this morning clearly demonstrated the company doesn’t yet understand why their business failed.
While driving, I noticed a person standing by the road with a billboard sign advertising the Circuit City going out of business liquidation sale–with discounts of up to 30%. As I passed the store I saw [...]

Microsoft released a beta of Windows 7 that is getting good reviews so being curious I decided to take a look.
In the past I’ve posted more then a few curt comments and jokes about Microsoft and Windows Vista. My scorn didn’t originate simply from being a Mac OS X user, which provides a baseline for [...]

Watch your Step – Ice along a sloping rock river bank.
“Beauty, like ice, our footing does betray; Who can tread sure on the smooth, slippery way: Pleased with the surface, we glide swiftly on, And see the dangers that we cannot shun.” – John Dryden
