140 Dell Kiosk to close

by Earl on January 30, 2008

in Business

No more walking by Dell Kiosk stores in the mall. I always wondered who buys a computer at a kiosk? According to an article in eWeek no one from here on:

Dell, the world’s second-largest personal computer maker will shut the kiosks, mostly in shopping malls, today — a decision the company said fits with its [...]

Windows and atomic energy

by Earl on January 30, 2008

in Business

There’s a story in ComputerWeekly about the UK Atomic Energy Authority dumping the Novell desktop infrastructure for Microsoft Windows and Active Directory.

Even if we’re only talking desktop applications, how come the thought of Windows and nuclear reactors together sends a chill down my spine?

Blu-Ray disk player and more

by Earl on January 28, 2008

in Hardware

We’ve had HDTV for a while but our only source of HD video thus far has been from the HD channels our cable company provides. This weekend I decided to do something about that.
I’d been waiting to see which way the format battle between Blu-Ray and HD-DVD would swing and with some of the recent [...]

Stay and rest a while

by Earl on January 27, 2008

in Blogging

I’m a bit of a statistic junky who enjoys reviewing who’s visiting this site and what they’re doing while they’re here.
Some visitors appear to be regulars while others arrive via a search on Google or by a kind link from another site. The average length of stay for many visitors is short, less then a [...]

Link baiting

by Earl on January 25, 2008

in Blogging, Business, Observations

Today I’ve noticed many posts concerning TechCrunch’s Michael Arrington calling Robert Scoble on his decision to place advertisement on his blog .

Was this post expressing a valid concern about “financial conflict of interest” or simply a tongue-in-cheek post that has more to do with link baiting?

MacBook Air performance test…duh!

by Earl on January 25, 2008

in Apple Mac

MacWorld did lab tests of Apples new MacBook Air and some of the statements made in their article bring about the “duh” factor.

… Our tests reveal that the slower processor and disk make the MacBook Air quite a bit slower than the other portables in Apple’s product line.

I’ve been using Ecto 3 beta as my main desktop blogging client since upgrading my Mac to OS X Leopard in October 2007 and I have to say that I’ve quickly grown to like it.

… I was hesitant to move to version 3 at first because they were so different but feel right at home with it now.

For the love of blogging

by Earl on January 22, 2008

in Blogging

Understanding that it’s not always going to come easy, learning how to go with the flow and connecting with your own creativity is key to viewing blogging as a positive experience.

…I make comments to many of the regular posts I read, when I quote or use material from another source I go out of my way to give proper credit, and when disagreeing with someone I strive to understand their point of view, stay focused on the facts and not take or make it personal.

“Moore” on iPods

by Earl on January 19, 2008

in Observations

By disagreeing I’m in a position of reviewing my own beliefs, building my own arguments and trying to understand someone else.

… The most recent round of discussion has been taking place at his blog via his post and comments on ” More about iPods.

No manifesto, it’s about convenience

by Earl on January 17, 2008

in Observations

We have previously rejected iPods, because we refuse to capitulate to iTunes, both the application and the format, as the toll road to our musical destinations.

…Most of my movies will likely continue to be rented from Netflix but when it’s convenient for me I’ll probably rent a few from iTunes.

Memories of past snows

by Earl on January 17, 2008

in Observations

The schools are closed today (it doesn’t take much to close them here) and looking out the window traffic seems to be light. Perhaps many people are taking advantage of having a reason for a late start this morning and enjoying a few childhood memories.
