PC Magazine did a recent review of the latest Apple MacBook Pro 17in Laptop and gave it a “Very Good” rating.  They said that it continues to be the lightest 17-inch laptop on the market, with faster components then before and a 1080p resolution.  They called it’s design elegant. The CONS they mentioned were that there wasn’t a less-expensive configuration and that RAM upgrades (via Apple) were insanely expensive.I agree with PC-Mag about the RAM upgrade prices but I think that they missed the intent with the comment of a less-expensive configuration.

There were no doubt more, as my feed reader only retains between 10-25 posts per subscription, some may have already dropped off….  So, if all this hype is not being driven by Facebook’s greatness, we must be on an incredibly boring web plateau with nothing of greater interest to write about.  I don’t agree with Mark Cuban that the Internet is dead, but I would agree that some of the major conversation topics recently have been boring.Where’s the innovation and the excitement…I don’t think it’s Facebook.

Windows was the standard at work and Microsoft Office was the standard office application package….  Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac was the software application that for me made the hardware switch to Mac feasible. Now, I find myself at the point where I’m uninstalling Microsoft Office for Mac.  My reason’s: I find I only use it as a case of last resort;Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac is not a universal application and runs slow on Intel Mac’s; I’m tired of the application feature bloat that has become part of most Microsoft applications; andI don’t want to spend the big bucks($) to upgrade to Office 2008 for Mac when they finally release it.For me, Microsoft Office for Mac has went from being a critical piece of software to being not required.

That was the case when I saw the photos, and read the story, of the group from Alberta, Canada that launch a weather balloon carrying a Nikon Coolpix P2 digital camera taking one photo each minute, to an altitude of 22 miles.  The last photo before the balloon burst is the the one below…simply amazing.  Great job guys! You can see many other photo’s at their site, SABLE via Neatorama.

According to Ars Technica, It appears that Microsoft’s Windows Genuine Advantage servers are suffering a worldwide outage:Windows Genuine Advantage suffers worldwide outage, problems galore:Late last night we started receiving reports from readers experiencing problems with Windows Genuine Advantage authentication.  Users of both Windows XP and Windows Vista were writing to say that they could not validate their installations using WGA, and one user even said that his installation was invalidated by the service. We contacted our sources at Microsoft, who told us off the record that the company is aware of a major WGA server outage affecting users across the globe….  Windows Vista and XP are affected, 32- and 64-bit versions…….Right now we don’t have official word on a cause, but one source with familiarity with WGA tells us that the issue may be caused by updates to the service that were required after Microsoft expanded the number of activations keys available for Windows XP.

It’s been reported and confirmed by Engadget that the iPhone has been successfully unlocked via software courtesy of iPhoneSimfree.com.  Not only does this unlock the iPhone but it’s also upgrade and restore resistant. It took less then two months to hack an unlock for the iPhone.

The rumor mills are once again turning at full speed as September 5th has been identified as the the date of a future Apple press event.  What is being rumored for this event is the announcement of new iPods, some running Mac OS X and perhaps full-screened, much like the iPhone. While this is indeed rumor, logic tells us it’s more about the when then the what….  This technology has already been displayed in the iPhone and it would be unreasonable for Apple not to scale it to their iPod product line.

I had a letter that I needed to quickly complete this morning so I used the iWorks 08, Pages, application.  I have to say that the more I use Pages the more I like it.It has all the basic tools one needs for “normal” word processing and it’s very intuitive and user friendly.  You can use it and not feel like you’re being over-whelmed by the program, as I often feel when I use Microsoft Word.Pages is becoming a nice fit for me and the fact that it can export in Word’s “.doc” format is a great bonus.

For email import you can now set a default encoding, enriched messages support quoting and URL handling, and messages can be imported more than once, showing up as replicants in the database. Both editions allow you to set the background color of rich text documents, support grouping of found documents directly from within Classify and See Also drawers, and read Finder and Spotlight comments when sync’ing an indexed folder.  The Dashboard widgets look way more attractive now, the Download Manager supports the new Microsoft Office documents in XML format, and many other functions have been improved, too, e.g., the advertisement filter. In addition, DEVONthink Professional checks for and repairs more problems than before, flushes the file system cache more often, and uses a background task to make importing PDFs more reliable.  As always, many minor internal improvements and fixes make DEVONthink Professional 1.3.2 faster and more stable. These updates is free for all registered users.I’ve been a DEVONthink user for some time and look forward to looking at these new versions.

For a little boy it probably means you’ll grow up knowing how to fight or how to run fast, or both (I won’t go into my own experiences.)…  However, according to scientist it’s a mute point in 100 years.news.com.au via Neatorama:Redheads are becoming rarer and could be extinct in 100 years, according to genetic scientists. The current National Geographic magazine reports that less than two per cent of the world’s population has natural red hair, created by a mutation in northern Europe thousands of years ago.Global intermingling, which broadens the availability of possible partners, has reduced the chances of redheads meeting and producing little redheads of their own.The article goes on to say that the highest concentration of this red gene is in Scotland where 40 percent carry it and 13 percent actually have red hair….  This gene can be dormant for generations before making another random appearance so I’m still hoping to see it again somewhere down the line.—-We last of the redheads should stick together so maybe I need to start a special blog roll for redheaded bloggers?
