+ linuxDwight Silverman looks at Dell’s offer of notebooks and desktops with the open-source operating system, Linux, already loaded and asks a very good question…”who’s really going to buy these machines?”TechBlog: Dell doing Linux, but who actually cares?:Most individual Linux users are used to installing and tweaking their own distros. They seem to be almost proud of the pain they endure in doing so — like guys in the ’50s who spent hours getting their old cars to run right, it’s a badge of honor to Linux fans that they must tinker under the hood.I think Linux users love the idea of a company like Dell offering pre-installed Linux because it validates their choice of operating system…. For a technical savvy friend I might, as long as I felt they understood the non-standard difficulties they may have to face.So like Dwight I think that Dell’s IdeaStorm Site requests for pre-installed Linux may have been skew by technical Linux users that probably would never buy a pre-loaded system anyway.

If you purchase one or more songs from an album you have six months to purchase the full album at a reduced price. This reduced price will be the album price with 99 cent deducted for each individual song previously purchased. This is a nice new feature that allows you to “try out” a couple tracks from an album, allowing you to then come back for the rest of the album without paying the full price.

I read that Microsoft has reported that it has sold more than 20 million Windows Vista licenses in February 2007, the first month after the operating system’s general debut in January. It also stated that that would be twice the sales rate of its predecessor, Windows XP.Let’s see…it’s been five years since Windows XP so I would think the existing base of PC’s would be much larger…. I believe that would give you a truer picture of Vista vs. XP sales rate.Don’t you just love how statistics can be made to prove anything you want them to.

There doesn’t seem to be any efforts by Apple to prevent hacking of the system and as the post below describes it is turning out to be a Mac hackers delight.Apple TV hacks coming fast and furious: VLC, SSH, VNC, Apache and more:The Apple TV hacks are coming fast and furious as recorded on both the Something Awful thread we already told you about, and at the Apple TV Hacks blog…. Some predict that eventually the Apple TV could change the media playing field itself.Apple TV Could Eclipse TIVO and Netflix, Analyst Predicts:Apple‚Äôs new set-top-box product, Apple TV, hasn‚Äôt enjoyed quite as much hype as the iPhone, but it has the potential to seriously alter the media landscape, according to one analyst.Jonathan Hoopes, a financial analyst with ThinkEquity Partners, predicts that between 25% and 70% of the 22 million Mac computer users, and many more PC users besides, will buy the Apple TV device over the next five years. He expects that the new wireless DVR will ultimately eclipse digital video pioneer, TiVo, and mail order DVD service, Netflix, which have 4.4 million and 8.8 million subscribers, respectively. What Apple does have is a device that can drive sales of it’s iTunes video media by making it easy for the customer to acquire and view video’s on their own TV’s in the comfort of their living room.

He, as many of the rest of us, was critical of the usability of the device when it was first announced.Robert is singing a different tune now (see below) and thinks that the Apple TV rocks…. I‚Äôm watching the second part.I think I‚Äôm going to use this almost wholly to look at Internet video shows. The integration with iTunes really is great…. Your computer and iTunes can automatically download each latest episode allowing your to bring them up on the Apple TV and watch them.

If…you already have a HDTV, andyou have a sizable music and video collection that you use iTunes to manage, andyou have an account with ITMS, then…the Apple TV is a wonderful addition to you media experience.( If you happen to be a Apple Mac user it makes it all the better. )However, if you don’t meet the above conditions then you might be disappointed if you purchase an Apple TV.All-in-all the Apple TV does what it was designed to do and it seems to do it well…. Set your iTunes to download the new ones automatically and then you check for any new ones from your living room and watch or listen to them from there.

Spring was certainly in the air today. I ended up working outside in the yard most of the day and am sure to be sore tomorrow from using muscles I’d forgotten about.

It seems to be an unspoken competition to see who gets the first “unboxing” photo’s of a new Apple product. I not sure what is gained by winning, but it appears that Gizmodo got the honors with the Apple TV. According to the latest tracking information, my Apple TV is on the FedEx vehicle for delivery today.
