Firm Launches Visionary Search for On-line Photos

Lockergnome: Polar Rose Launches Visionary Search For Online Photos: December 21, 2006

A company has combined automatic race recognition with 3D modeling into a visual search application and has announced an open beta trial, to begin in Q1 of 2007. The company is Polar Rose.

Using Polar Rose’s technology, it will now be possible to automatically search for and recognize faces on a consistent basis similar to the way people do - by using the visual cues of the photo as opposed to nearby text analysis. The company’s unique technology creates a 3D model from a single 2D image of a face. This approach radically improves photo matching by compensating for variations in lighting, facial emotions and pose.

It seems that this will be available as a free Web browser plug-in and through royalty-free API’s. Where as today if you do an image search on a particular persons name you will get many pictures of strangers with that same name or even other object images tagged with that name. With this new technology the search would logically only return those that closely matched the face of the individual that you wanted.

Potential application mentioned for this search capability would include:

    * Search for more photos of the same person on specific sites or across the whole Internet

    * Collectively add information and tag people in online photos

    * Automatically sort their online photos by the people appearing in them

    * Be alerted when new photos matching visual search criteria appear

    * On a news site such as cnn.com, to find additional or supplemental information about any of the people photographed in the story - transparently and without disrupting the cnn.com user experience.

    * On social networking or dating sites such as MySpace or match.com, to find people matching specific looks and to receive feeds of certain types of images from their friends’ photo albums.

    * For an online photo album, to categorize hundreds or thousands of photos automatically by face, as well as finding local or global matches and searching/sharing feeds from friends.

    * For a conference the viewer will be able to get or put information on the people appearing on the photo documentation site of the conference. This will help anybody finding a name to a face or visa versa.

I can personally think of a few uses not mentioned.

* Searching the internet for any photos that might contain the faces of known terrorist.

* Searching the internet for any photos of your future wife or husband in case there was something they hadn’t told you yet.

* Searching the Internet Social Sites for anyone that may be using your photo as their own.

* Searching the Internet to try and find the identify of people found but not identified.

In any regards it sounds like some very interesting technology if it can be made to work fairly swiftly and reliably.

Thoughts for the Holidays

by Earl Moore on December 21, 2006

Ever since we purchase our current home there has been a long term discussion between my wife and I of getting a dog. We both love dogs and have had them in the past, but because we take such a commitment very seriously we’ve been hesitating about actually doing it…until this week.

200612210929
Yes, we started the process to adopt a cute little Basset Hound/mix puppy named Foster (see picture).¬† We’re adopting Foster from a local rescue agency that cares for and places pets with good long term families.¬† The adoption process is rather involved including filling out an application, having references checked, and home visits.¬† They do a good job in trying to make sure that you are making a permanent commitment and that you and the pet will be happy.¬† Things look good that we will be able to get Foster after the first of the year.¬† We look forward to welcoming him to our family.

It’s hard to believe that the holiday season is upon us again.¬† I’ve had my shopping done for some time and all the presents are wrapped. Because of our multiple family situation we do our big family gathering on Christmas Eve.¬† Our four grown children and a couple of their significant others will all be here for that day with gift exchange later in the evening.¬† My wife and I save our gifts to each other for Christmas, which is a simple quiet day shared by the two of us.¬†

I wish everyone a great holiday season.

Review: RCDefaultApp preference pane for OS X 10.2+

by Earl Moore on December 17, 2006

ABOUT RCDEFAULTAPP:

Rubicodes’ RCDefaultApp is a free Mac OS X preference pane that provides an easy solution for setting the default application preferences used for various URL schemes, file extensions, file types, MIME types, and other identifiers. In addition you can use RCDefaultApp to choose the preferred application for each Internet protocol such as web, email, newsgroups, and FTP as well as setting the application when digital cameras or FireWire webcams such as iSight are connected to the computer.

While you can set all of these preferences from different locations within OS X, such as using the Finder’s Get Info panes to set the default application for file extensions, RCDefaultApp provides a one-stop easy and intuitive solution for controlling and customizing your applications for your own preferences.¬† I’ve personally found it to be invaluable to set up my Mac to run and operate the way I want it to. With RCDefaultApp I can be assured that when I open a file it will open in the application I most often use.¬†

INSTALLATION AND USE:

RCDefaultApp install as a preference pane in System Preferences and operates much as any other preference pane. I’ve used this application for some time and have had no problems with it.¬† I’m currently using OS X 10.4.8 on a PPC Mac Pro. RCDefaultApp is an universal application for both PPC and Intel Mac’s.

The application is free to download and use from the link above.

MY OPINION:

For me it’s a must-have utility:¬† ¬† [rate 5]

Site Problems

by Earl Moore on December 15, 2006

It appears that my Internet host is having some problems today. I’ve been in touch with them and hopefully the problem that is causing slow response and time-outs for MeanderingPassage will shortly be resolved. :)
