LEGO Brick’s

by Earl on November 30, 2006

in Observations

Forty-eight years after they were introduced, LEGO toys are still much beloved by children and parents alike for their bright colors, durability, and the amount of imagination they inspire during play….¬† Each LEGO brick must have that perfect grasp — strong enough to hold onto another brick but easy enough for a child to pull apart.¬† The production of LEGO bricks is so accurate that only 18 out of 1 million LEGO elements produced is considered defective.

I’ve written a couple of other post about the Zune and¬ª CNN makes it official; Zune is ugly | George Ou | ZDNet.com:New York Times Andrew Ross did a review of the new Microsoft Zune on CNN’s morning show (Video here with wrong aspect ratio*) that might as well have written Zune’s obituary.¬† Ross attempted to be as fair to the Zune as possible but nothing could save the Zune if it failed the ultimate test of a successful music/video player.¬† Questions like “why is it so clunky” or “why couldn’t Microsoft get some decent design people” shows that the Zune is something that fashion conscious people wouldn’t be caught dead holding.

This is what happens when you try to throw in every feature plus the kitchen sink.Mac Mojo : It’s all in the numbers …:About 30,000,000 lines of code make up the current version of Office that we are developing….¬† Some people have more areas, some have less, but if you just think of that number, that’s a tremendous amount of responsibility per developer……Just to throw another mind-numbing number out at you, there are about 40 lines of text on the page of an average paperback book….¬† Imagine trying to find a single typo in all those books — that’s what most bugs are, don’t ya know!I personally feel it’s progressed to a point of where having office products with this much code is simply a matter of bloat and feature over-kill.

Speaking out for our children

by Earl on November 3, 2006

in Observations

I think most people would agree that there is a very real problem with public education in the U.S. Some feel it is a problem with the system while others argue it’s due to a lack of personal responsibility by both teachers and parents….¬† again – TV Squad:Cosby’s address at a forum entitled “Education is a Civil Right” took on black parents and educators for not setting goals for children or being able to answer their questions about why education is important.¬† Saturday’s speech offered none of Cosby’s past, more inflammatory criticisms of young African-Americans for squandering the progress made by the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s.In their post on the subject, TVSquad.com asked the question:Has television’s ideal dad aged into an unfunny curmudgeon, a much-needed public intellectual or just another self-important celebrity?Anyone that has viewed Bill Cosby delivering one of his addresses would be hard pressed to doubt his sincerity.
