Cooleemee Dam Waterfall

by Earl on January 7, 2010

in Photography

Here’s a wider view showing the main part of the Cooleemee Dam with water rushing over it (Yesterdays image was to the left of this one.)
I may have mentioned in previous posts of photos from this location that this dam was originally built for an old textile mill. The mill has long since disappeared but [...]

Don’t fall in

by Earl on January 6, 2010

in Photography

While walking along the river, dam and waterfall I took a few longer exposures using a Singh-Ray Vari-ND Filter. The water flowing over the dam seemed clearer then I’ve often seen it — perhaps because we’ve had higher water levels for a while or due to the colder temperatures. After making this photo I stood [...]

November’s Waterfall
“The thinnest yellow light of November is more warming and exhilarating than any wine they tell of. The mite which November contributes becomes equal in value to the bounty of July.” – Henry David Thoreau

I woke a little later then normal this morning and proceeded with my normal morning routine–put on coffee, feed the dogs (giving Foster his anti-seizure medicine), checking email and reading blog feeds. I’d decided yesterday if this morning was clear I’d drive over to the Cooleemee River Park (Bull Hole) and see how high the [...]

Upper Whitewater Falls, NC

by Earl on November 13, 2009

in Photography

Upper Whitewater Falls, plunging 411 feet, is reported to be the highest waterfall east of the Rockies. There’s also a Lower Whitewater Fall in South Carolina that drops 400 feet.
This waterfall is easy to get to but hard to get close to. It can be found off Highway 281, southeast of Cashiers, NC, in the [...]

Chores win out

by Earl on October 14, 2009

in Photography

Yesterday, I had things around the house I wanted needed to do but because it was such a beautiful fall day, cool wet weather forecast for the next three days, I decided instead to ride to a favorite local park for a little photography.
I’d forgotten the massive road paving projects underway. I’ve heard about 9 [...]

Making it personal

What, no one finished their SoFoBoMo ‘09 book yet?
I may back into the start date for my book. I’ve got several photo project ideas but turning one of them into a book is going to be determined by how well I’m able to “tell the story” of my idea with the photographs I’m [...]

Ignoring the small inconveniences

by Earl on April 28, 2009

in Photography

It was later in the morning as I pulled into Riverview Park and I knew the light would not be the best for capturing the dam and falls. I’d hesitated on photographing at all this morning what with my spring allergies being bad the last couple of days. However, I’ve also been feeling guilty [...]

Back to the falls

by Earl on March 29, 2009

in Photography

As any who follow this blog might know, I often visit and photograph at the Cooleemee Riverside Park (Bull Hole) located on the South Yadkin River near the small town of Cooleemee, NC.
While usually interesting, it’s especially so after a few days of rain–such as we just experienced.
By contrast, in dry periods little or no [...]

The sound you hear

Cascading Waters – Bull Hole River Park
This photo was taken last Saturday morning when it was 8°F. Look closely at the photo and you’ll see ice on the branches in the top left and on the rocks along the waters edge.
Someone standing close by would no doubt have thought I was shooting in “continuous high” [...]

My core photography goal

by Earl on January 10, 2009

in Photography

awe – an overwhelming feeling of reverence, admiration, fear, etc., produced by that which is grand, sublime, extremely powerful.
I remember as a child I was awed by simple things–the seemly huge woolly worm crawling upon a leaf, that perfect combination of path, sheltering trees, rolling ground and rambling creek forming what must be a magical [...]
