Training

by Earl on February 1, 2010

in Photography

After a weekend of winter scene photos we’re back to our regularly scheduled programming.
There’s a couple more of these urban scenes and then I’ll be switching to another photographic subject for a short period. I’m experimenting with shooting different themes under self-set restraints. A couple of weeks ago I was shooting nature-scapes along [...]

A winter tour

by Earl on January 31, 2010

in Photography

Instead of staying in yesterday during the final stages of our recent winter event, the wife and I decided we were going to explore and enjoy the beauty of this new snow before it began to melt or became dirty.
This wasn’t all that big of an adventure, our small SUV has 4WD.
We did a loop [...]

2009 Fall Foliage: Orange

by Earl on October 28, 2009

in Photography

This photo is a closer view of the leaves from yesterdays bright orange/red tree.
While these colors are amazing, what if tree leaves were always this color and they turned bright green only before falling off for the winter? I guess we’d be amazed at green leaves. It’s about what is considered normal or unusual.

2009 Fall Foliage: The Streets

by Earl on October 27, 2009

in Photography

These scenes of fiery color were only three of many as I found along the city streets–red, orange, yellow, and green, all present in abundance. It’s no wonder this is my favorite time of year or that these colors with the cool temperatures make one feel so alive.
I’m certainly not alone in enjoying this season. [...]

2009 Fall Foliage: The Garden

by Earl on October 26, 2009

in Photography

Fair warning, this week is going to be fall foliage week on Meandering Passage.
Salisbury, NC, is a small town which, like many, has a historic homes district with lush lawns, gardens and trees. It’s a nice area to walk about and take photographs. When photographing in this part of town I often get [...]

Learning to like the rain

by Earl on October 24, 2009

in Photography

It was overcast and rainy this morning but when I looked out into my neighborhood and saw how the wetness made the fall colors look so vibrant and inviting I decided to drive into Salisbury and take photos–rain be damned.

I took my Nikon D700 with the 24-70mm f/2.8 lens. I also mounted [...]

Taking a break from rainy day photos

by Earl on October 21, 2009

in Photography

While out and about one sunny Saturday a few weeks ago, I took these photos of the Salisbury, NC Train Station. The station was built in 1908 by the Southern Railroad in the Spanish Mission Style and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
The station is still served by three Amtrak [...]

Easy Street

by Earl on June 24, 2009

in Observations

Yes, a street most people would love to be on resides in Salisbury, NC–who would have believed it, certainly not I.
Of course the name “easy street” has a lot of history:

Easy Street (film), a Charlie Chaplin comedy
Easy Street (book), a memoir by Susan Berman about her mobster father, David Berman
Easy Street (TV Series), [...]

Weekend: Walking the home turf

by Earl on June 1, 2009

in Photography

It was one of those stay close to home weekends which are part restful and part paring down the ever present chore list. On Saturday, we did a walk about in downtown Salisbury viewing parts of a sculpture exhibit and accidentally discovered a previously unknown antique shop–at least it was unknown to us.
I of course [...]

Photography: It’s historic

by Earl on September 30, 2008

in Photography

In yesterdays post I featured photos taken with my Nikon D300 DX format camera of local wildlife. My DX camera had clear advantages in that situation.
My second photo stop yesterday was in the historic district of Salisbury, NC. For this situation I was using my Nikon D700 with a 20mm f/2.8 prime lens. I’ve [...]

It’s rare that you call someone concerning a home repair and have them there and finished in a day, much less a few hours.
Around noon yesterday I noticed that a couple of shingles on our roof had come loose and were slanted at a 40 degree angle.
Not a great thing to notice when they’re calling [...]
