We purchased our current home in 2006 primarily because it was close to work and was a single level home. We’d been living in a tri-level and both my wife and I were tired of all the stairs. Although not openly discussed at the time, I don’t believe we purchased this house thinking it would …
Reclaiming Memories
A project completed just in time for the 4th of July was the refinishing of the pictured bench. This bench belonged to my wife’s parents and became ours when her mother passed away in Florida almost two years ago. This bench could hardly be recognized as the same bench now. Then, it was covered in …
It doesn’t look like a vacation?
Each year my wife, Bonnie, and I try to take one significant vacation–last years was a Alaskan Cruise. This year we decided to do something different–invest the money back into our home. I know that sounds crazy what with home prices still falling in many parts of the country. Our logic is that construction costs …
My Living Room Project, Part III
In a previous post on this project I recounted installing a black glass door enclosure for the fireplace and building and installing a custom wrap-around oak mantle. I’m happy to report that not only has progress continued but I’ve also completed this project. The last three items from my original list included: moving the flat …
My Living Room Project, Part II
On June 25th, I described a Living Room home project I was about to begin. Since that initial report I’ve made progress and have completed the following two items: replace the fire screen/tools with a new black glass door enclosure for the firebox; and replacing the dated mantle shelf with a custom built modern wrap …
My Living Room Project
I’ve started a new home project. Our living room is a fairly large room that contains a floor to ceiling brick (gas log) fireplace that’s looking a bit dated. The fireplace is the standard fare, a brick column with a raised hearth, a mantle shelf and the obligatory metal fire screen and tools. There are …
Building a dining room table extension
A while back I had mentioned that I was taking on the project of building a table extension. I’m happy to report that that project is complete and that I’m mostly satisfied with the results.
How To: Floor tile layout using a drawing application
A little pre-project planning using some readily available tools can often avoid mistakes and waste during these projects. One such project that I’m dealing with is the tiling of a bathroom floor with not just one size tile but a combination of both 12 inch and 6 inch tiles. In order to get the placement of the tile pattern correct, and also a count of the needed tiles, I decided to use a drawing application to do an initial layout plan. The drawing application I used was OmniGraffle Pro, but any drawing program which allows you to define ruler and grid scales could work…. Once you have the pattern of tiles laid out that meets your needs, you can number each tile and the tile cuts and to get a final count.
