Learning to like the rain

by Earl on October 24, 2009

in Photography

It was overcast and rainy this morning but when I looked out into my neighborhood and saw how the wetness made the fall colors look so vibrant and inviting I decided to drive into Salisbury and take photos–rain be damned.

I took my Nikon D700 with the 24-70mm f/2.8 lens. I also mounted [...]

Watch your step

There was light consistent rain falling most of the day yesterday which made for some interesting photo opportunities. I especially like how the rain enhances color saturation and gives a slick and shiny appearance to most things. I did get some photos I liked, including the one above taken along one of the walkways in [...]

This is an oldie but a goodie for me.
I searched today for a YouTube video on setting up a Nikon Dxxx camera to do hands free bracketing burst. I’d previously set this up on my D300 but wanted to be sure I didn’t forget any of the settings on my D700.
This function is [...]

Under my feet

Purple Dead-nettle
My initial observation as I walked a wooded trail near a small pond late last week was it was perhaps still early for spring wild flowers to be blooming–glancing down I realized I’d almost missed a spring production right under my feet.
These photographs of a Purple Dead-nettle was taken with tripod using a Nikon [...]

Nikon D700 Firmware Version 1.01 was released today.

The following improvements have been made in version 1.01
- When Custom Setting a4 Focus tracking with lock-on was set to Off in Continuous-servo AF, the lens drive moved gradually without achieving focus. This issue has been resolved.
- When the Speedlight SB-800 was mounted on the camera with [...]

Nikon D700: The black and white of it

by Earl on December 4, 2008

Sharing…
During my reading this morning I came across an article by Mike Johnson confessing his opinion of digital sucking at black-and-white photography may be changing with his use of Nikon’s D700 D-SLR.

…the Nikon D700 seems to be a really good camera for B&W. I mean really quite wonderful. I did Carl’s “paper towel test,” and [...]

Dam

by Earl on November 3, 2008

in Observations, Photography

I had planned on taking advantage of the beautiful weather this week to take some photos but by Sunday I wasn’t feeling a hundred percent so I chose to stayed in. Turns out that was a wise choice.
While I enjoy being outside taking photos it’s certainly not a hardship being home and working on my [...]

Me, my flashlight and a wooded path

by Earl on October 4, 2008

in Photography

This morning I departed the house well before dawn to make the twenty minute drive to what has become one of my regular photo shoot locations. I’d promised myself to do a sunrise photo shoot there someday and today was the day.
The location is an old mill dam. The dam now produces electricity while [...]

Photography: It’s historic

by Earl on September 30, 2008

in Photography

In yesterdays post I featured photos taken with my Nikon D300 DX format camera of local wildlife. My DX camera had clear advantages in that situation.
My second photo stop yesterday was in the historic district of Salisbury, NC. For this situation I was using my Nikon D700 with a 20mm f/2.8 prime lens. I’ve [...]

The sweet spot for a DX camera.

by Earl on September 29, 2008

in Photography

I was out and about this morning enjoying the fall weather and taking a few shots in the local area. My first stop was a park with a wildlife habitat located not far from my house.
As in most wildlife habitats there are strict controls on how close you can get to the wildlife. As [...]

Anyone who owns a Nikon DX camera has hear of the 1.5 magnification/crop factor. This crop factor is the ratio of the dimensions of a camera’s imaging area compared to a reference format. The reference format is most often the 35 mm film format or what is called Full Frame (FX) in Nikon digital camera [...]
