How To

I use the Color Labels feature in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 to track the status of my photos through my post-processing and publishing workflow. I thought I’d share how I’m doing this.
I. The Technical Stuff:
Adobe Lightroom has five Color Labels you can apply to photos: Red, Yellow, Green, Blue, and Purple. I use the last [...]

GPS to Photo to Map Workflow

by Earl on June 2, 2008

in How To, Photography

As mentioned in an earlier post, ” Where Exactly Was I When I Took That Photo “, I’m trying to automatically capture GPS locational data directly to my photos at the time they’re taken. … I’ve included a basic workflow diagram of the process I use to capture, record, and display this locational data with Adobe Photoshop Lightroom and Google Maps . [ click on image below for larger version ] GPS_WF.jpg Note of Interest: The example photo and map view in this workflow go together.

A little pre-project planning using some readily available tools can often avoid mistakes and waste during these projects. One such project that I’m dealing with is the tiling of a bathroom floor with not just one size tile but a combination of both 12 inch and 6 inch tiles.  In order to get the placement of the tile pattern correct, and also a count of the needed tiles, I decided to use a drawing application to do an initial layout plan. The drawing application I used was OmniGraffle Pro, but any drawing program which allows you to define ruler and grid scales could work….  Once you have the pattern of tiles laid out that meets your needs, you can number each tile and the tile cuts and to get a final count.

so when I read Alex Iskold’s post on Read/WriteWeb titled “How JavaScript is Slowing Down the Web (And What To Do About IT),” it struck home. With Meandering Passage I’ve experienced the slower page loads and the sometimes page load hesitation or halts due to suspected javascript issues….  In other words create an HTML page containing just the widget tag, and in the page you want the widget displayed you include an iframe tag pointing to the HTML page with the widget code. This method solves two problems:- the javascript code of the widget (3rdparty) does not slow dow the display of your page….  JavaScript does not restrict cross domain scripting – so if you place a script src on your tag pointing to a 3rd party, that third party can see the referrer of your page, collect any data the user types, and who knows what. The iframe solution has been used by advertising companies and more respected publishers since Microsoft first introduced it.

Installing an Apple Airport Extreme Card in a Intel Mac Pro is not considered by Apple to be a user installed option so you will find little or no instructional help from Apple. It’s not a job for the timid….  I purchased my intel Mac Pro from Apple as a refurbished unit and couldn’t have an 802.11b/g/n Airport Extreme Card installed as a factory option….  Locate the two WiFi antenna leads stored in the area above the cards mounting location and attached them to the two antenna post on the card.

Electrical storms or power line spikes and surges can lead to failures so be sure and protect your valuable equipment with surge protectors and/or UPS’s.I’ve lost some irreplaceable digital photos to a hard drive failure, so I know how terrible that situation can be….  However, if the data amount is large, or you want to back it up more often, you may need to find other methods. There’s always going to be a balance between how important the data is and how much it’ll cost in either time or money to safeguard it….  My Back-Up Strategies:You may think that my back-up efforts are over the top for most home users, but after the hard drive crash where I lost some irreplaceable photos I swore to never let it happen again. The two main strategies I use are: back-up and then back-up the back-up; andmake it as automatic as possible so I can’t get lazy or forget to do it.
