This morning I discovered my main computer wouldn’t connect to the Internet even through all the equipment seemed to be on and functioning. I looked at my IP address and routing table and it appeared as it should. Rebooting my computer, my network router and the cable modem didn’t help.

I also couldn’t sign into the GUI for my D-Link router at its normal IP address so I tried the factory default address and there it was.

Somehow my router had reset to the factory defaults overnight. I don’t use the same IP range as what is set as default which caused the connection issues when the router reset. I luckily had recently saved a configuration file from the router so it only took a moment to have everything back to normal.

I’ve never had this router (or any router) reset like this before. One thought is that there was some type of attack against the router/firewall from the Internet, but I could find evidence from the logs. There also was any type of firmware auto-update function set.

I’m probably just being paranoid. Stuff happens!

  1. Yep. It could have just been a software glitch that caused it to reset. That’s my vote! :-)
