I find I enjoy late autumn, when everything has a brownish color cast, more then earlier autumn when there is a green color cast — perhaps because it brings back good childhood memories and marks the time of leaves drawing to a swift close.

I’ve been doing daily morning hikes on bike trails for a year now, seldom missing more then two days in any given month.  The results have been positive — I’ve lost a good amount of weight, my blood pressure is the lowest it’s been in twenty years and my cholesterol is now within healthy boundaries.  It’s become a part of my routine and lifestyle.

The only camera I’ve taken on these hikes have been my iPhone4, which leaves much to be desired as a landscape camera.  However, today my knees were feeling the need for a day off so I took an abbreviated easy walk on some of the trails I use with my Nikon D600 in tow.

It was nice being able to capture a scene in camera rather then just in my minds eye.  This is probably one of my few and final salutes to autumn/fall this year.

  1. Congratulations on the improvement in your health!!

  2. Congratulations on all the positive gains with regards to your health Earl. Those trails certainly look like a nice place to shed the pounds.

  3. Well, I’d say you received a double benefit then – the health aspect and the enjoyment of your surroundings. Although we walk our dog 3 times a day in the neighborhood, I wish I could commit to being in the woods as often like you have pictured here Earl. Great set of images – I love the textures the browns bring.

  4. An improvement in our physical health will also cause an improvement in our mental health. Glad to hear of your progress. Love the closeup of the two leaves!

  5. A beautiful final salute to Autumn. This looks like glorious woodland with the light filtering through the trees.

  6. Congratulations on all the improvements in your health, that is wonderful news Earl!
I love your late autumn series, the way you’ve captured the light and the colours is absolutely stunning – the patterns created by the trunks on the forest floor is very beautiful. It looks like such a marvellous place to go walking.
