Enjoyable distractions

I totally unplugged from photography and the Internet after posting my post last Friday…no reading or commenting, not even picking up a camera.

For this enjoyable break I have to thank my daughter visiting for Father’s Day along with a few free hours spent feeding my techie side a project building a “Hackintosh” computer — none Apple hardware running the Apple OS X operating system and software. Both events were well enjoyed, a wonderful visit and a successful project.

There are people much smarter then I who have made loading Apple OS X onto non-apple Intel based computers almost easy — especially if you spend a little time up front selecting compatible components. However, you still do need some technical understand for updates and such.

I’m not sure what I’m going to do with my “Hac Pro” yet, but in some ways it’s more powerful then my current Mac Pro computer so if it proves to be reliable I may make it my main computer. Another option is to make it a backup/media server. As I write this I’m copying over my Lightroom Catalog and Photos to one of it’s internal drives to determine real world performance.

What Others Are Saying

This is a project I could really sink my teeth into, only I wouldn’t be building a “Hac”. Strictly PC.
Glad you had a great weekend. If your weather was as nice as ours, I’m sure it was.

The dollars buy a good deal of performance these days and it’s never been easier to build one yourself…PC or Mac. :-)

I have often wondered how much it would take to build and maintain such a machine. I suppose I have fallen quite deep already into the “not tinkering” so much with my computers since I have switched to Macs other than drive and memory upgrades.

Mark, I have some of the answers to your “wonders” — see my recent post, “Refelcting on my first “Hac Pro.” :-)
