Cape Fear River & Bridge - Wilmington, NC

This is the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge over the Cape Fear River in Wilmington, NC as sunset approaches.

Weekend before last, my wife and I drove down for a couple of days. The trip had already been planned before our dog Foster had to be put down earlier in the week. Our timing wasn’t the greatest as the area was also packed with what we believe to be UNCW graduation activity. However, we did have a good time for the most part.

  1. … and you got at least one excellent photo!

  2. Earl, I love the light!

  3. Damn. I’ve been through Wilmington and I’ve seen the Cape Fear river a couple of times, but I can’t remember if I’ve ever seen this bridge. If I haven’t, it’s a shame because I love these types of bridges.

I’ve also always thought that “Cape Fear” was one of the greatest location names ever coined. Of course, the 2 movies with that name have helped. But the name just makes you wonder how it came to be. Why would you call a place “Cape Fear”? Is there something there that I should be afraid of? Probably not. But it’s a great name anyway. And I’ve always wanted to see the Cape Fear Lighthouse, but never took the time. Now I probably never will.

A fine image, Earl. Did you take any more as the sun got even lower? I love the sidelight. I think it must have gotten even better as the water darkened and the oranges became more pronounced.

    • Paul, this bridge is just down river from the USS North Carolina.

Cape Fear is a great name. I believe I read somewhere the name probably came from the treacherous, hidden shoals, coupled with frisky and capricious winds, tides and currents causing a lot of ship wrecks/accidents. If you watch the surface of the Cape Fear river for a while you can clearly see some unusual current patterns.

Thanks Paul. I should have paid more attention to the bridge as the sun dropped a little lower but there were so many other photo opportunities I got distracted. It probably was even better a little later on.

  4. Sorry about your dog, some great images I have to plan with my trips to Fla. to stop in North Carolina and stop at Camp Lejune, stopped in S.C. and went to see my old stomping grounds of Parris Island and Hilton Head, those people know how to live.

    • Thanks, Don. Yeah, you’re certainly hitting the hot spots of North and South Carolina. :-) I hope you guys are doing well in FL.

  5. Glad you and Bonnie had time away and it all came about at a good time. I’ve never seen this brigde before either but most of my time in Wilmington was close to the airport. I love the light on the ship, it just pops!

    • Monte, this bridge isn’t too far from the airport. It’s located just down river across from the USS North Carolina memorial. I was loving this light for sure. :-)
