No. 4 - Amsterdam, Netherlands

It was fun and interesting to visit Amsterdam but I don’t feel I ever need to go back. Perhaps it was the timing of our visit, it was crowded with thousands of young people coming in for weekend partying and there were heavy rain showers much of our time there. In truth, we also spent less time in Amsterdam then any of the other places we visited.

However, Amsterdam may have been one of the most photogenic locations we visited — I’ve added the Amsterdam photos to the trip’s gallery collection.

In all the 230+ photos in the collection give fair representation of our trip. I may continue to add one or two photos to the collection as I revisit those initially eliminated. I took around 950 photos in total during our travels.

  1. Had you been to Amsterdam before? Curious about what made it not so interesting.

I think I might be going there on business next year…

    • Hi Eric, No this was out first visit to Amsterdam. Like I said I think it might have been more about the timing. While we were there the place was crawling with kids seemingly drawn by the drugs and with an older group seemingly drawn by beer, drugs and legal prostitution — and they seemed to be all walking the streets 24/7. Of course the coffee shops, restaurants, and bars were catering to these crowds.

It almost took on a circus or county fair side show atmosphere in the main parts of town. A first impression for sure but one we didn’t have enough time to get past.

Certainly there are some wonderful museums and historic places to visit in Amsterdam and it’s photographically wonderful. If I went back I’d stay a little further out from city center and focus on some of these points. You may fine it totally different then we did but there are too many other places I’d rather visit.

  2. I have friends that visited Amsterdam (they are quite a bit younger) and stayed for 10 days and loved it, but it’s not the kind of fun I would seek out on a vacation. It certainly has it’s appeal to the younger crowd. Still, it really is a beautiful city.

    • Ken, perhaps that’s another explanation for my impressions of Amsterdam…I’m just too old! :-)

  3. Earl, as always the images are outstanding. I’ve never been to Amsterdam and it’s currently not on by bucket list.
