My daughter arrived for a long weekend (her birthday’s Saturday) so yesterday afternoon we drove two hours to Cary, North Carolina, to see Alison Krauss and Union Station, with Jerry Douglas, at Cary’s Booth Amphitheater — a sold out show. I’ve never been a huge Alison Krauss fan but it was an excellent show and there’s no argument they’re all very talented musicians — much unlike some of the “teeny music stars” these days.

This was another reminder to me about being open to new experiences and being willing to reevaluate previous assumptions.

I had only my iPhone camera, so while the concert was going on I played around with taking some shots with it. The conditions would have tested the best of cameras and the iPhone struggled to deal with the tonal range — fine detail is lacking but still some pleasing impressionistic shots.

We didn’t arrive back until after 1am and I was up at 6am this morning walking the dogs…it’s going to be a long day! ;-)

Have a great weekend.

  1. The crowd and stage shot is very good. It does a good job of conveying the atmosphere of the place. The amphitheater shot makes a fine compositiion… I especially like the low sunlight falling on the standards.

    • Hi Don, thanks. The iPhone shots actually turned our a little better then I expected. It’s the best “phone camera” I’ve ever had.

  2. Surprisingly good quality for iPhone shots. I have pretty much abandoned the phone camera except is an emergency. Enjoy your daughters b’day and have a good weekend!

    • Ken, yes I was surprised by the photo results. At the time I was taking the shots I didn’t have very hight expectations. Thanks, you have a good weekend also.

  3. Here is to wonderful birthday weekend!

I continue to be impressed by the iPhone camera. Very nice job on both of these photos.

Unlike you, I am a big Allison Krause fan. I think I may have to crank up one of those albums this afternoon.

    • Anita, thanks. Yes she’s my baby and this is her 27th birthday…hard to believe.

I’m certainly more of a fan now that I’ve heard and seen them in person.

  4. Man it has been a long time since I’ve been here, I have had trouble getting into the site for some reason, been catching up on the past, great shots as usual. You and your family enjoy the weekend.

    • Don C., Hey, good to hear from you again. I noticed you’ve changed your blog location/name. I’ll have to catch up also. Thanks!

  5. I’m jealous. I love Allison Krauss. She has an amazing voice. Sounds like a fun time for sure!

    • Eric. It was a very good show and you’re right about her voice…but then she plays a mean fiddle too. :-)

  6. I love the lighting and framing of those two shots a lot, and I’m really amazed about the iPhone camera, the quality seem very good. I hope you all had a wonderful weekend!

    • Martina, I was pleasantly surprised by the iPhone camera as well. I wouldn’t want to make a very large print from it’s photos but for the web it comes in handy Thanks and I hope your weekend was nice as well.
