A fiery explosion of color

On interesting recent events: With some trepidation I was reading yesterday about the upcoming expansion of the top-level domains on the Internet.

The Board of ICANN today gave final approval to the most dramatic change to the Internet in four decades — allowing the expansion of new Top-Level Domains (TLDs). This monumental decision will allow companies and organizations to turn their own brands into Internet domain extensions (that is .brand) or to create broad generic strings such as .CAR, .SPORTS or .BANK.

While I understand the current naming scheme needed to be revised to increase capacity, these open-door, wild-west changes seem geared more towards greed and money grabbing then any organizational effort. It use to be if you knew a companies name you could make a guess to it’s web site being a “.com” domain…not in the future. It could well be a “.IAMSOCONFUSED” domain. The ICANN is putting this decision in the light of “opening the Internet’s addressing system to the limitless possibilities of the human imagination.” Hummm…yeah, we all know how well that usually works out. :-)

As for this post image, this bloom is an explosion of wild color — fitting for the topic above. This flower was discovered growing in the shadows of a group of trees with one bright ray of light highlighting this single bloom. I did darken the vignette but it was the “pop” of brightness and color which pulled me to this shot.

  1. I cannot imagine a more perfect picture to accompany this story. “Wild west”, indeed. Clearly something “had to give”, but this is going to produce some headaches. One thing is certain, it is going to get interesting.

LMBO! :) Yeah, that’s going to work out just fine. Jusssssst fine! Now, I’ll never be able to find a website without Google’s help. Sigh.

  3. A wonderful blossom to notice and shoot. Great looking colors. The domain change sounds so much like the powers that be, bowing to big money interests and disguising the move with nice sounding but meaningless promises.

  4. You’re right about this being a decision for greedy corporations. These names will come at a hefty price tag only big companies can afford. What’s next? Will we have to subscribe to GOOGLE to use their service? Oops! Forget I said that.
Very nice photo, Earl. The red is unreal.

    • Ken, oh I’m sure if Google thinks it can get away with it they’ll bill us. Greed is totally out of control. Thanks.

  5. I heard about this on the radio the other day. It seems like it is goingtomakethingsmorecomplicated.thantheyarealreadynow for URLS. :-)

Very fitting photo, and very cool.

    • Mark, LOL …we’ll have to wait and see how this plays out but it’s got all the ingredients for a real mess.

      Thanks…. :-)

  6. What a fabulous shot – I love the vibrant and bright pink tones of the petals. The vignette only adds to the effect, my compliments.
