First touched by the mornings sun - Salisbury NC

No matter how far you travel, how grand your subject or how amazing your vision and creativity the core of a good photo still keeps coming back to the light. We photographers become “chasers of the light” — I’m surprised that descriptions hasn’t been included in the dictionary under photographer. The more we learn, the simpler it becomes.

It’s still about the light.

Steeple above the trees - Salisbury NC

On my walk last weekend I stepped into a morning of perfectly wonderful light. I wish I could claim it was all planned but if that had been the case I would have planned to arrive earlier. Arriving when I did, later, I thought the best lighting was probably past. Never was I so glad to be wrong and in this case a little late.

These are three photos taken within a couple hundred feet of each other. The light playing off the front facades of the eastward facing homes was delicate and warm with shadows from front yard trees forming interesting and moving patterns as well.

Yelp, a good day to be a photographer…but then, there’s not many bad days for that.

  1. You say it exactly right. It is all about light. Even the lack of it…is part of the light too. These are beautiful shots using the light so very well. Fine shooting.

  2. Love the steeple shot. And, I guess we san say everyday is a good day to be a photographer.

    • I almost didn’t include the steeple shot in with this group…I debated if it fit since the other two were homes. I’m glad you like it because I do too, which is why it made the cut. You have a good day also Monte, and thanks!

  3. You have mastered the art of the pithy post. I am more and more impressed with your ability to say so much in so few words. Then there is the bonus of the beautiful photos. While I like them all, the first one is my favorite. So simple, so eloquent—hmmm brings me back to your writing.

    • Anita, this is the first time anyone has told me I’d “mastered the art of the pithy post,” although my wife would say on more then one occasion I mastered the art of the “pissy mood” — but that’s another story. ;-)

I sincerely appreciate those kind words and I’m glad to see you’re “out-and-about.”

  4. The framing and composition are excellent on all of these, Earl. The lighting is a beautiful enhancement.

  5. Everytime I sit and serious think about how light can change the way we see so many things, I continue to be amazed.
