Bridge in the forest
Bridge in the forest

The foot bridge above is part of the canoe portal trail around the dam and falls at Cooleemee River Park, NC — featured in yesterdays post. When this photo was made the sun was high and extremely bright, as you can see by the highlights in the background of the forest, which by the way is where the dam is located.

I’ve never attempted it but it would be fun to canoe up or down the river from this point, with a waterproof camera of course. Hummm…I believe there is a waterproof case for the Canon S90.

  1. A fine mild colored image of this footbridge. It makes a good subject. Nice detail.

  2. Earl, I love the b&w and I love the detail. I wish you could have separated the tone of the path/bridge from the surrounding forest floor, though. You and I both love path, and that would have been a great way to call that out. Is that a 4×5 ration crop? I love that ratio.

    • Chris, thanks! Both the forest floor and the path in this area are covered with several inches of fine, light tan, river sand deposited by flooding several months ago. This is why there’s not a more natural separation of tones between the path and surrounding areas.

It didn’t occur to me to perhaps burn in the forest floor slightly to highlight the path but it’s a great suggestion and I’ll certainly explore it. I appreciate feedback — the more eyes the better.

No, this is 3×4 aspect ratio straight out of my Canon S90 — no crop.

  3. Hi Earl,

Great capture. I love bridges. Try kayaking it, and yes, get the waterproof case for the S90, LOL.
    Have a great evening!

  4. Photographing mid day is always tough but you handled it well with this image. Like Chis, the details are what engage me in this. Perfect for b&w also! It looks like a great place to explore.
