Blue Ridge Mountains, NC

Blue Ridge Mountains, Southwestern NC

I read a post by Paul Lester last night concerning the concept of beauty so if I had to come up with a subconscious reason for selecting the the title for this post, it would probably come back to that. Perhaps if we could agree that beauty was only true if it lasted for, oh say, a thousand years or more it would do away with all these temporary beauty fads our society goes through.

As you can see the Blue Ridge Mountains get their name from the bluish color when viewed from a distance. This color is caused by a haze created by the natural forest of the mountains. The Blue Ridge contains the highest peaks in eastern North America with 125 exceeding 5,000 feet (1,500 m) in elevation. The highest is Mt. Mitchell, in NC, at 6,684 feet (2,037 m.)

So for a billion years old I think these mountains are still looking beautiful–a beauty that has met the test of time! :-)

For those interested, this photo was taken in the southeast corner of North Carolina, looking east, near Highlands, NC (map).

  1. A beautiful mountain view with a very nice autumn touch. Very enjoyable to view.

  2. Sigh … I miss the parkway! :-( Thanks for keeping the memory alive for me, though!

  3. They mountains might be getting up there in age but they look pretty darn good just the same.

  4. @don – Thanks!

@Paul – I know you must miss the mountains. While I like the coast and beach they don’t recharge me the way the mountains do.

@Steve Skinner – Yea, they don’t look a day over 999,999,999 years old do they? ;-)

  5. I’ve never had the opportunity to visit the parkway in the Blue Ridge Mountains but it is on my list. I did spend a week in the Smoky Mountains back in October of 2003 and loved it. And, yes they do look pretty good for their age.

  6. Heck, these mountains are barely teenagers! Hopefully they will have a long life filling magazine covers. :-)

  7. I have seen the Blue Ridge Mountain, but that’s it. I never got to spend time there. Your photo certainly captures that timesless beauty. I agree that if I must choose between coastal region and mountains, I choose the latter.

  8. Hi Earl, I’m online again, finally. Feels good be be out and reading all my Internet friend’s blogs again. :)
This was quite a thought provoking post. Mother nature is like humans, or rather the opposit. Think of how mountains have rised on our planet’s surface, and still are. Think also how everything probably looked billions of years ago. I believe the world looks better now. As we do, we who are older than 20. :)

  9. @All – Thanks everyone.

@Ove – Ove, welcome back…it’s good to see you active again!
