Slumming with the Mallards

Male Wood Duck

This beautiful male Wood Duck was found hanging out among the Mallards, making them look rather poorly attired. Many people consider the Wood Duck to be the most beautiful of all waterfowl.

Interestingly, the Wood Duck is one of only a few North American ducks that nest in trees. These trees are usually near water and sometimes directly over water. Wood Ducks will readily use nest boxes if available. The Wood Duck is also the only North American duck that produces two broods in one year.

At different times of the year they’ll range over most of Mexico and the 48 central United States.

I was pleased this particular Dapper Dan* was so cooperative about getting his photo taken.

*Dapper Dan – slang term for a very swanky, neatly dressed and groomed man.
