Cloudy Mountain Top - Asheville NC

Cloudy Mountain Top

I spent the weekend in Asheville, North Carolina. The mountains of western North Carolina are a couple of weeks behind in their spring progress compared to my home in the central piedmont region of NC. Many plants and trees are still blooming and the foliage has that unmistakable new fresh look.

It was a weekend of spring showers and rain, with low clouds, as you can seen in this photo shot from the grounds of the 434-acre North Carolina Arboretum.  This particular photo is a HDR image composed of seven separate exposures.

Shooting this scene with a single exposure resulted in either the sky washing out to white or the foreground black. Since it was the detail and contrast I felt made the scene interesting, I gave HDR a try. I’m surprised it turned out as well as it did considering I shot hand held–not the recommended way to take multiple/bracketed images.

The trees blooming in the foreground are either dogwood or wild cherry.

  1. You must have a very steady hand, young man! :-) I miss the mountains! The Lowcountry cannot compare!

  2. @Paul: The recipe for this was: “1 part” steady hand and “2 parts” luck. ;-)
