Meandering Passage: Upgraded to WordPress 2.7

I see I wasn’t the first off the blocks this morning with upgrading to WordPress 2.7 but I had a few plugins I wanted at the latest versions.

The upgrade seems to have gone well, with no ‘known’ issues at this time.

I do like the new Dashboard, it’s similar to the WP Dashboard the … Read More

Should I be saving RAW photo files?

I now shoot exclusively in RAW format and then convert the RAW files into DNG files when importing into Adobe Lightroom. My back-up process (see section below) doesn’t include any long term saving of the original RAW files.

I’m curious if others would recommend saving the original RAW files and why?

What would be an … Read More

A pleasent surprise

I had a pleasant surprise today when my Tamron 28-300 mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di VC (Vibration Compensation) Macro lens arrived back from warranty repair.

I’d purchased this lens as a general purpose zoom lens shortly after getting my Nikon D700. I now realize the lens hadn’t been right from the very first. There were some … Read More

Jury duty this week perhaps

A few weeks ago I received my notice for jury duty beginning tomorrow. I’ll call in today after 5:30 PM to see if they need me to report at 9 AM tomorrow.

I’m not looking forward to it and if I’m needed I may not be posting much this week. At least for some reason … Read More

Sharing a Shooting Location

It was a second attempt for Paul Lester and I to get together for a sunrise photo shoot at an old river dam near Cooleemee, NC. We’d tried to make it happen last weekend but heavy rain prevented it. No rain today but there was still be a price to pay.

This particular “swimming hole” … Read More

Photo recycle zone

You may notice a few photos being reposted (recycled) as I’m going through my end-of-year photo organizing and cleanup.

There are a few photos with potential for which I’m not entirely satisfied with my initial efforts. Some of these photos may get tweaked and reposted. … Read More

A favorite first visit lens?

On your first visit to photograph a location do you have a favorite lens? I personally like a good general purpose zoom lens mounted for first visits. For instance, on my Nikon D300 you’d normally find Nikon’s 18-200mm DX VR lens and on my Nikon D700 you’d find Tamron’s 28-300mm DC VC lens (currently in … Read More

“Where there is perhaps a province in which the photograph can tell us nothing more than what we see with our own eyes, there is another in which it proves to us how little our eyes permit us to see.” – Dorthea Lange

Link: Mac performance for digital photographers

Here’s a good Mac performance guide for Adobe Photoshop written by Lloyd L. Chambers:

Macintosh Performance Guide for Digital Photographers & Performance Addicts

For those Windows users looking for additional performance your guide is considerably shorter…Step 1: Get a Mac!

Nikon D700: The black and white of it

Sharing…

During my reading this morning I came across an article by Mike Johnson confessing his opinion of digital sucking at black-and-white photography may be changing with his use of Nikon’s D700 D-SLR.

…the Nikon D700 seems to be a really good camera for B&W. I mean really quite wonderful. I did Carl’s “paper towel

Ketchikan homes

If you stand near the main docks of Ketchikan, Alaska, looking inland and slightly westward you’ll view these neighborhood homes situated on a hillside.

To my eyes the homes fit perfectly with notions of Alaska and while this photo was take recently, May ’08, it looks somewhat timeless.… Read More

Nikon D3x: Very nice but no blip on my radar

So, Nikon introduced a new “Big Kahuna” in it’s digital SLR camera lineup, the 24.5 MP D3x. It’s specifications are impressive and after looking at released sample photos the results are impressive as well.

I’m sure there’s photographers who will put this added resolution and image fidelity to excellent use but I doubt my photos … Read More

Did you say Pee Dee River?

I’m always seeking good photographic opportunities near home. Close locations quickly become regularly visited sites that don’t require extensive planning or travel time.

Some local spots I’ve found thought my own explorations, others via the Internet and a few have been learned of from photographer friends.

Paul Lester recently ‘shared’ a location for which I … Read More
