_EBM0912.jpgOver time I’ve accumulated several lenses for my cameras. These lenses require a variety of filter sizes: 52mm, 62mm, 67mm, 72mm, 77mm and 86mm.

Some filters I regularly use such as UV, for general lens protection, and circular polarizer. I haven’t and don’t plan on purchasing these filters in each of the sizes above so I’m investing in filter step-up rings.

My thoughts are to have a standard filter size as 77mm and use step-up rings to adapt the 62mm, 67mm and 72mm lens to this size. I seldom use a filter with the one lens that is 86mm. I haven’t decided yet how to handle the 52mm lens but I could step it up as well.

200809161451.jpgAn issue with this is that with these step-up rings and filter in place, the bayonet hoods that come with most lens can’t be used.

This isn’t a big deal for me as I don’t use these often anyway (prefer my hand as a sun shade) but I was wondering how others handle this.

How do you handle multiple filter size requirements? If you use step-up adapters have you given up on using your bayonet hoods?

  1. I do the same thing. I purchase 77mm filters and then use the appropriate rings. As you’ve mentioned, you can’t use the lens hoods. This way saves a lot of $$$, especially since I like really good filters, like the Singh-Ray’s, which cost $200+ each!

  2. Hey Paul:
I’m glad to hear I’m perhaps on the right track.
I agree with your preference for having “good filters” that can be shared among the different lens.
    Thanks for the comment.
