Reportedly: OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard will be Intel Only

While Apple continues to improve and enhance OS X 10.5 Leopard, they’re also working hard on the next major release, OS X 10.6.

It’s being reported that the code name for this next OS X version will be “Snow Leopard” and that it will be Intel-only. Up to this point Apple has continued to support older Power PC platform with it’s OS updates.

While this news is not unexpected (it has to be a drain on Apples resources to support the older platforms) it makes me sad to know this day has arrived.

It means that OS X upgrade for my Power Mac, my son’s Mac Cube and my daughter’s PowerBook will end at OS X 10.5 Leopard.

Still, with Leopard, Mac PowerPC platforms should yet enjoy years of usefulness.
