As if the Middle East wasn’t already a dangerous place, now it’s turned into a nuclear arms race.

ISRAEL’S top-secret air raid on Syria in September destroyed a bomb factory assembling warheads fuelled by North Korean plutonium, a leading Israeli nuclear expert has told The Sunday Times.

Professor Uzi Even of Tel Aviv University was one of the founders of the Israeli nuclear reactor at Dimona, the source of the Jewish state’s undeclared nuclear arsenal.

“I suspect that it was a plant for processing plutonium, namely, a factory for assembling the bomb,” he said. “I think the DPRK transferred to Syria weapons-grade plutonium in raw form, that is nuggets of easily transported metal in protective cans. I think the shaping and casting of the plutonium was supposed to be in Syria.”

My biggest fear is that there will not be the level of control that was exhibited by nuclear armed nations during the Cold War. “Nations” in the Middle East seem to react to violence with equal or greater violence with the smallest of provocations.

I do not doubt that if Israel thought they were about to be attacked with a nuclear warhead they would not hesitate to strike first and many of the Arab Nations and fundamentalist groups in the area seem to be sworn to the destruction of Israel as a holy cause.

Very scary, indeed!
