I received my AppleTV near the end of March ’07, when Apple was only offering a model with a 40gb hard drive.  While 40Gb may sound like a lot of movies, music and video’s, in practical use it turns out not to be so.

I’d been waiting for a decent price on a 2.5 inch, 100Gb+ hard drive as a replacement.  Recently I found a 2.5in Samsung 160Gb 5400rpm hard drive for well under $95 and made the purchase.

Today I did the upgrade, replacing the AppleTV 40Gb drive with the new 160Gb one.

I basically followed the Apple TV hard drive upgrade instructions at Engadget, with one exception.  I have a copy of “iPartition” so where Engadget used the terminal command line to resize the MEDIA partition, I used iPartition.

I would give one word of caution that some of the copy and formatting steps can take a long time, so don’t assume that’s it’s failed or hung up without giving it an extended period to complete.  This isn’t emphasized in the instructions.

Also, once complete you’ll have to go through the initial setup of your AppleTV again from the beginning.  So after the upgrade I’ve got approximately 144Gb of usable space for my media. The AppleTV is syncing with my iTunes library as I write this.
