Apple and Steve Jobs continue the “green” initiative

by Earl Moore on May 18, 2007

Being recently accused of not being environmentally friendly obviously hit a nerve with Apple, or at least with Steve Jobs. Not only has Steve come out with public statements outlining the future “green” path Apple is taking, but now Apple is offering a new program that gives schools a chance to recycle their old computers rather than send them to landfills…and they don’t have to be Macs!

The California-based firm also pledged to shoulder most of the burden for the effort. Aside from placing the computers on cargo palettes, schools could take a hands-off approach: Apple would collect the systems itself and destroy anything that could become a security risk if left alone. Tags, serial numbers, and other marks would be removed. Hard drives in particular would be broken into “confetti-sized” pieces, Apple said..

No matter what the motive or motivation for this action, it’s a good effort. Anything companies can do to use their greater resources to improve our environmental situation is a plus.

by Earl Moore on May 18, 2007

I think it’s a cult following thing, but if any of you are fans of Science Fiction/Horror B-Movies then you’ll probably know who Bruce Campbell is and get a laugh out of this video. It’s Bruce Campbell (Army of Darkness) doing an “Old Spice” commercial and singing “Hungry Like a Wolf”.

Upgrading a MacBook Core Duo using a Dell wireless network card

by Earl Moore on May 17, 2007

There’s an informative post on HardMac, concerning updating a older MacBook Core Duo to 802.11n using a Dell Wireless mini PCI-E card that was purchased on eBay. The original Core Duo MacBooks only supported 802.11b/g.

It seems that since Apple has made the switch to Intel it is now using more “standard” components then they use to. This is good news for those who want to upgrade or replace components. Components from Apple usually cost a premium.

A concern is that of course this violates any Apple warranties. But if your hardware is old enough that will not matter.

Meandering Passage: Upgraded to WordPress 2.2

by Earl Moore on May 16, 2007

Meandering Passage has been upgraded to WordPress 2.2. To be honest I’ve been feeling a little burned out on blogging this week and I find it helps to do something technical when I feel this way. So, I decided it would be a good time to do the WordPress upgrade.

Of course I did a back-up of the site and database prior to doing the upgrade. Please note that the upgrade does upgrade the database. I haven’t notice any problems thus far so I’m hopeful it’s gone well. I don’t use widgets on Meandering Passage,,,still do it the old way with hard coded plugins and they all still seem to be working.

As always, if you notice anything wrong, or right for that matter, please let me know via my contact form or a comment here.
