When we purchased our current home a little over a year ago we knew there were many changes, updates and refreshes that we wanted to do. The people who lived here before us were smokers and had inside dogs. Besides, their taste in colors were nothing like ours.

If you watch the real-estate shows on HGTV they always say to paint your rooms neutral colors when you try to sale a house. I think it’s safe to say the previous owners of our house never watched HGTV. This past year we’ve remodeled the kitchen, wall papered one of the bathrooms and repainted two bedrooms. The third bedroom I claimed as a office and did a hurried paint job just prior to moving in.

The carpet in this third bedroom was terrible. It was dirty tan with lots of stains, some of which was from smoke and some of which appeared to be pet related. Last week we decided to replace it with hardwood laminated flooring. They’re putting the flooring down as I type this.

When you put down new flooring it changes the whole balance of the room and gives you an opportunity to change wall and trim colors prior to the flooring going down…my wife convinced me of this.

So starting last week I dismantled my computers and home network and moved all the furniture out of the room. We spent most of this holiday weekend painting. One coat of primer and two coats of paint…plus the trim. I really don’t enjoy painting but I have to admit that it looks good. I can’t wait to see it with the new flooring down.

After they finish the flooring, I get to move everything back into the room and figure out how to hook it all up again.

I can’t claim we didn’t have any fun this weekend. On Saturday night we went to the NASCAR Busch series CarQuest 300 race at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in nearby Concord, NC. Friends had free tickets for one of the suite boxes overlooking the raceway which included a catered buffet dinner and open bar. This was my first experience and I have to say if I could have seats in the suites each race I’d become a NASCAR fan. The power, speed and sound of those cars are awesome. We had a blast!

I also managed to watch a couple of old John Wayne war movies…it doesn’t seem like Memorial Day without that.

  1. Earl, it sounds like a busy weekend for you. I live about 5 miles from Lowes Motor Speedway and had to drop my son off to do some work there. I can’t say that I’m a racing fan, though. I did marvel, though, at all of the campers and race fans that I saw along the way! :-) I even wrote a post about it: http://www.paullesterphoto.com/wordpress/?p=546

Sunday, after the Coca Cola 600, it took nearly 2 hours to traverse those 5 miles back home. About 1 1/2 hours of it was just trying to get out of the parking lot!!!

  2. Hi Paul,

When you get into that type of traffic you just have to go with the right mind set to maintain your sanity.

From your posts I had deduced that you lived somewhere north of Charlotte but I didn’t know you lived only 5 miles from Lowes Motor Speedway. That’s just a short piece down the road. We ought to hook up for coffee and maybe a photo walk about sometime.

I use to do some film photography while in the Air Force (many years ago) and then with children and other things let it drop. I’m been getting into digital photograph lately and am finding I have a passion for both the photography and the post production digital development.

If you ever decide to do that photo workshop you’ve talked about I would definately be there.
