Very few people would argue with the fact that the distributed effect of the Internet is changing computing as we know it. No longer are we looking at applications that only run stand-along, but are quickly seeing more and more applications that allow people to work together, share information, and present the user with simple and highly functional interfaces. What other trends are driving this phenomena?

Ted Patrick’s post list what he views the technical trends of the distributed Internet applications. These trend¬† categories include:

Real-time & Multi-User;
Online/Offline;
Rich, Beautiful, Amazing;
Simple Server APIs;
Flash Player/Apollo; and
Cross-platform.

The last category which Ted defines as marking the end of the Windows and Windows-only era could well make the operating system inconsequential.  After all, would it matter what OS you are running when using an application that is exactly the same on all platforms?
