I did a little upgrading and enhancement on “Meandering Passage” last night. I upgraded WordPress to version 2.0.4 and added two new comment enhancing plug-ins.

Akismet stops the vast majority of the spam comments that hit my site but as of late I’ve noticed a couple of those strange random text group comments making it onto my posts. I don’t see the return on the effort with most of these SPAMS. The URL’s and links on many appear to be dead or broken so the whole process seems to be an exercise in futility. In any case, I decided to take some additional steps to eliminate those few that are making it past Akismet.

I installed AJAX Comments which is a plug-in by Mike Smullin that allows one to post comments quickly without having to leave or refresh the page. Along with this I installed AuthImage which is a plug-in by Keith McDuffee that creates an authorization image to help combat spam in comments. AJAX Comments comes pre-coded and with clear instructions on using AuthImage with it.

Please let me know if you experience any problems or have any suggestions for a better comment authorization system for WordPress.

  1. Ok, this is a desperate attempt on my part. I’ve been trying to get the same combo of plugins to work on a test blog and it just won’t work, no matter how closely I follow the instructions in both plugins. My WP guru is away, or too busy or whatever she’s calling it. Even the plugin authors aren’t responding to emails.

The ajax commenting works great, but the authimage pic isn’t showing up at all and I’m also getting a warning about my functions.php file. I also have the proper modules and Libs on my server.

Dude, is there any way you can help me get this combo working on one of my sites?

I’ll pay you if you can get it working and show me how to do it with other sites.

You can use the email I used while posting this comment to contact me.

I’d really appreciate the help if you can.

    Thanks.

    Paul

  2. Paul:
I just installed the ajax commenting and the authimage and they worked so I don’t have any experience with trouble shooting these plugins. Have you checked the Ajax comments and authimage home sites? I found some helpful information there and the authors offered to help if someone was having trouble. Sorry, I wish I could be of more help!
